The present book deals work completed over more than a decade on characterizing conditions of tropical forests in the Garo Hills of western Meghalaya State of North East India. This is essentially a compilation and compendium of findings presented in an Ph.D. work of Ashish Kumar and in related studies including analyses of forest fragmentation, Land use pattern, Forest classification, community analysis. and botanical diversity of the region. The work has led to innovations in use of remote sensing information and tools and to suggestions for designing a protected area network for conservation planning in the region A companion volume will present findings on, and implications for, wildlife conservation of the region.
