Description
Attention has been one of the most popular subjects in basic cognitive-psychology research, and so its study has generated much empirical data and many theoretical explanations. It has also become a very important factor for those who study how we interact with technological systems and environments. How can these researchers in human-technology interaction take advantage of all the knowledge amassed on attention in basic-science research? This volume addresses this question by bringing together the leading researchers who have pursued both the development of models and theories of attention and their application to investigating and solving practically relevant problems in areas such as aircraft and automobile design, technology applications for health care settings and the home, and adapting technology for the aging population. The volume will include a comprehensive introduction on briding theory and practice in the psychology of attention and a conclusion outlining a future research agenda.
Reviews / Votes
"This excellent compilation of 'attention research' could not have come along at a more opportune time, bringing together as it does the most current knowledge from the most qualified contributors on a topic of great practical as well as theoretical interest today. There being no comparable single source for this important literature, I expect this well-organized, comprehensive volume to attract a wide audience and become extremely influential." --William C.Howell, Adjunct Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University and Rice University
"...this book represents a comprehensive compilation of applied attention research, much of it in the context of Wickens multiple resource theory of human attention. It is loaded with nuggets from well-seasoned scientists such as Neville Moray and Tom Sheridan to candidates for young investigator awards represented by Nadine Sarter and John Lee. There is grist here for any behavioral science and many engineering researchers, but especially for an experimental
psychologist interested in applications." --Richard W. Pew, Principal Scientist, BBN Technologies

"The excellent theoretical review chapters highlighting the work of pioneer researchers in the field, such as Wickens and Broadbent and more recent researchers, to name just a few, and applied examples make this book superb reading for all scholars, practitioners and students in the field of Human-Computer Interaction." --Abbas Moallem, HCII News
