Clarice Cliff was one of the most prominent ceramic designers of the twentieth century. Born in 1899 in the Staffordshire Potteries, she started work as just another factory girl, but by 1928 had launched her own range of pottery, 'Bizarre'. But if Clarice Cliff's rise from apprentice gilder to art director was remarkable - and all the more so for her being a woman - it was not without its tensions; for years she conducted a secret relationship with her married boss. Lynn Knight is the author of the biography Clarice Cliff; a memoir, Lemon Sherbet and Dolly Blue: The Story of an Accidental Family; and The Button Box: The Story of Women in the 20th Century Told Through the Clothes They Wore. She has edited two collections of short stories, The Secret Woman: Classic Stories by Twentieth-Century Women Writers and Dangerous Calm: The Selected Stories of Elizabeth Taylor and abridged The Diaries of Beatrice Webb. She has worked as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Queen Mary University of London and at the British Library and currently hosts an RLF 'Reading Round' group. She lives in London.
