The Chartered Teacher

What is a Chartered Teacher? What special attributes and capabilities does that new title denote? How will teachers acquire recognition as Chartered members of the profession? How will the quality of education provided by Scotland's schools be enhanced by the introduction of this new grade of teacher? This book answers these questions. Written by three authors closely involved in this important development for the teaching profession, it provides the background to the introduction of the chartered teacher. It analyses the development of the Standard for Chartered Teacher, a new way of recognising the accomplishments of classroom teachers. It demonstrates how that Standard drew together two types of evidence: the international literature on teachers' professional development and the views and aspirations of Scottish teachers themselves as revealed by the most extensive consultation ever conducted with the profession in Scotland. The Chartered Teacher programme creates a new range of professional development opportunities for teachers.
The book considers the courses and activities teachers will undertake to obtain Chartered Teacher status and how their previous professional experience and qualifications can contribute to the achievement of the new award.
