Living Language: Language and Literature

This text offers advice to students on how to discern and evaluate some distinctive ways in which writers use English in prose fiction, poems and plays and other media scripts. Students are invited to explore different kinds of verbal art by close reference to specific texts drawn largely from familiar English literature syllabuses. Throughout the book, practical approaches to literary stylistics are demonstrated by exploration of specific examples, followed up by additional texts. A range of contemporary critical comment and concepts are applied in the three sections devoted to prose fiction, poetry and drama respectively. Introductory and concluding sections explore and summarize important general principles.
