Franz Radziwill (1895-1983) is regarded as an important painter of the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, and as one of the leading representatives of Magic Realism. This volume brings together more than a hundred of his paintings and works on paper belonging to private collections, including favourite pieces owned by the founder of STERN magazine, Henri Nannen, and highlights from the collection of Claus Hüppe, Oldenburg. Executed between 1916 and 1969, the works shown here extend across almost the entire creative life of Radziwill, who chose to spend most of his life in the North Sea resort of Dangast. Thus we have a broad arc from the Expressionist early work via pictures of the Neue Sachlichkeit period all the way to meticulously detailed works of his mature ouvre, which come across as increasingly fantastical. In addition, this publication brings together all of the thematic complexes which interested the artist throughout his life, and thus continually found their way into his work: landscapes, townscapes, seascapes, still-lifes and portraits.
