Description
Apart from dementia, depression is the most frequent psychopathological syndrome seen in later life. Nevertheless, experts suggest that depression in old age remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. This special issue of "Gerontology" presents concise and readable reviews on the epidemiology, diagnosis, management and treatment of depression in the elderly. Complicating factors associated with treatment of geriatric depression, such as poor physical health and and lack of compliance, are examined. Finally, the problems associated with tricyclic anti depressants are reviewed and debated in a panel discussion. Given the growing importance of geriatric depression, this publication is suggested reading for all psychiatrists, general practitioners and social service professionals working with the aged.
