Description
Marcus is the best player on his soccer team--a graceful, fluid force who can dominate the pitch. He's good enough, in fact, that there are rumours he is being scouted by the best football team ever. A brilliantly realized young adult novel, THE SILENT STRIKER is moving, funny, and uplifting. This is the story of what happens when Marcus starts to lose his hearing--and with it, it seems, his whole world. Troubled by his developing disability, he finds himself unable to concentrate on the game and increasingly isolated from his friends and family--but is that isolation real, or is it the result of his own behavior? As he confronts not only his hearing loss, but the problems with his family, friends, and girlfriend Marcus grows to understand that in life as in soccer, accepting the help of others is essential.
Reviews / Votes
'This book is full to the brim with joy, heartache and passion for the beautiful game.' (Melvin Burges); 'You don't need to be a teen - this is open YA fiction for all ages with a style very far from that of Hunger Games or the Divergent series.'(Assia Shahin - blogger); 'The Silent Striker is a an amazing book and I think it would benefit people, whether they are hard of hearing or not, by helping them to understand how people feel when they suddenly go deaf. I think that all schools should have a copy of this book in their library, to raise the profile of deaf children in school. How many other deaf heroes do you know from books?' (Robert Murrell, age 13, profoundly deaf. Reviewed for the National Deaf Children Society); 'A welcome addition to British writing in this genre. It's a strong inspirational story about human aspiration, overcoming and achievement.' (Jacob Ross); 'Touching, funny and well tackled!' (Muli Amaye, novelist); A richly compelling, emotionally resonant tale of courage.' (Melanie Amri, author); 'A compelling story.' (Rajeev Balasubramanyam, author); 'A story that takes you throught every emotion a young school boy goes through.' (Dotun Adebayo, BBC Radio 5) 'Moving, funny and uplifting. A must read. The Silent Striker scores! A brilliantly realised young adult novel. (Rodney Hinds, the VOICE Newspaper)More details
