Kastanas

Die Bände stellen - verzögert durch den Tod des ersten Bearbeiters - den Abschluss der 7-bändigen Publikationsreihe zu Kastanas im Axiostal dar [Bd. 1-6 = PAS 2-7, 1983-1989]. Dies ist Anlaß für zusammenfassende Bemerkungen zum Siedlungsverlauf durch den Ausgräber [B. Hänsel]. Jungs Arbeit dokumentiert und analysiert die bronzezeitliche und früheisenzeitliche Drehschreibenkeramik, die nachträglich die Datierung der Siedlungsschichten liefert und die erste umfangreiche Vorlage mykenischer Keramik für Makedonien darstellt. Es handelt sich um bemalte und unbemalte Keramik mykenischen und protogeometrischen Typs sowie Graue Ware. Ausgehend von Einführung und Forschungsgeschichte werden makroskopisch und chemisch die Warenarten nach Brandart, Farbe, Bemalung, Oberflächenbehandlung und Magerung unterschieden. Die Funde werden typologisch gegliedert, nach Schichten untersucht, um eine Datierung der Schichtenabfolge zu erreichen, und mit publizierten Funden Makedoniens und Museumsmaterial verglichen. Gestützt werden die Keramikuntersuchungen durch eine naturwissenschaftliche Begleitstudie zu den C14-Daten [B. Weninger].

The volumes - belated because of the death of the first researcher - form the completion of the publication series of 7 volumes on Kastanas in the Axios valley [vol. 1-6 = PAS 2-7, 1983-1989]. Therefore, they also contain some concluding remarks on the settlement development by the excavator [B. Hänsel]. Jung's study documents and analyses the Bronze Age and Iron Age wheel-thrown pottery, which provides the belated dating of the settlement stratigraphy and forms the first detailed publication of Mycenaean pottery from Macedonia. Finds include painted and plain pottery of Mycenaean and Proto-Geometric type as well as Grey Wares. Starting with an introduction and the history of research, the work presents the macroscopic and chemic differentiation of wares according to firing conditions, colour, painting, surface treatment, and tempering. The finds are classified by types, analysed according to layers in order to achieve a dating of the stratigraphy, and compared with published finds from Macedonia and museum material. The pottery analysis is supported by a natural scientific study on radiocarbon dates [B. Weninger].
