Description
This book emerged from the two authors' experience of more than two decades of teaching the Basic Course in Linguistics, which is a pre-requisite course for undergraduate students studying linguistics in Nigerian Universities. It is meant to introduce the basic concepts in linguistics to students with little knowledge about the course and other related fields of study. A quick glance at the book will give readers the impression that it is only providing basic knowledge on phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, it rather goes beyond this to discuss theoretical and topical issues relevant to linguistic study. However, illustrative examples from various languages were provided but special reference were made to Nigerian languages which we hope will assist students to have better understanding of range of basic issues in descriptive as well as theoretical linguistic analysis.
