Description
Written with beginning mathematics students in mind, the authors take an approach to algebra that has been extensively class tested and consistent with the AMATYC standards. They emphasize relationships between arithmetic and algebra, helping students to see how seemingly isolated principles fit together. The order of topics is thus somewhat different than the order presented in most texts. For example, rather than presenting all the operations on integers and later presenting the same operation on polynomials, this text presents them one after the other. This order reinforces the operation on integers and gives students an immediate reason for learning the operation (since they will have to perform the same operation on polynomials).
