Divided We Fall

"I would like people to say I restored possibility in American life." This was President Bill Clinton in a private interview at the end of Haynes Johnson's journey through a divided and apprehensive America. In the process of researching for this book Johnson, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, interviewed grassroots Americans across America. From businessmen and judges to youthclub members and illegal immigrants, all were interviewed and expressed their deepest hopes and fears. The same major concerns kept surfacing: jobs, crime, race, education, leadership, morals and life for the next generation. The result is a portrait of a people disconnected from their government, yearning for change but aware of the hard choices that will not yield to rapid solution.
