Hollis Calvin is sorting through his father's possessions when he discovers some letters written by Merris, his grandfather. Merris was a Second World War airman stationed in England, who suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. Contained inside one of the letters is a photo which Hollis expects to be of his grandfather and his friends. But to his horror Hollis finds that he is in the picture along with his recently-deceased father.


Shocked by this bizarre discovery, Hollis is desperate to learn the secret behind the impossible photograph. Haunted by the past, he journeys to England, and the seemingly quiet village of Candleford, in search of answers.
