The specialty of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and correction of misaligned bite patterns, and malpositioned teeth and jaws is known as orthodontics. It also involves the study of modifying facial growth termed as dentofacial orthopedics. Misalignment of jaws and teeth is common and the treatments involve using dental braces and other appliances to steadily move the jaws and teeth around. In severe cases, jaw surgery may also be used. Usually, the treatment of misaligned teeth takes about 1 to 3 years to complete, and the braces are slightly altered every 4 to 10 weeks by specialists.
