Description
Allergic symptoms are common and are dealt with by doctors in many specialities. In this work the authors aim to show that the diagnosis and management of allergic conditions can be straightforward, but that it is heavily dependent upon a carefully taken history and a full examination of the patient. The "colour atlas" approach demonstrates the broad range of relevant signs in allergic disease and the authors have added appropriate tabular and diagrammatic material. This includes, for example, a checklist questionnaire for the evaluation of the patient's history and an explanation of the role of exclusion diets in the diagnosis of food allergic disease. There are chapters on allergic disorders of the skin, nose, chest, gut and eye. Other chapters cover the principles of allergic investigation, the mechanisms of immunological reactions and the clinical manifestations of autoimmune diseases with reference to allergy to food, drugs and immunodeficiency, of particular interest given the spread of AIDS.
