In December 1811, during a period of twelve days, two entire households were savagely murdered at Wapping in the East End of London. It was the most famous crime in London until Jack the Ripper murders of 76 years later. There was no modern police force, and the only qualifications for being a magistrate was to have a certain annual income. Panic set in all over the country, even in places well away from London. The British government offered the biggest reward ever known for information leading to the conviction of the murderers - and eventually a man was tried for killing all seven victims. But was he the real murderer?
