Description
This U.S. Army Corps manual presents guidance for the hydraulic design of spillways for flood control or multipurpose dams. Procedures recommended are considered appropriate for structures suitable to most field conditions. Basic theory is presented as required to clarify the presentation and where the state of the art is limited in textbooks. Both laboratory and prototype experimental test results have been correlated with current theory in the design guidance where possible. The book consists of seven chapters. The first chapter discusses spillway function and classification. Chapter two presents hydraulic theory in relation to such topics as discharge, gradients, energy loss, cavitation. The next two chapters explore spillway crest and spillway chute, respectively. The fifth chapter reviews specialized spillways such as side channel and shaft spillways while the next chapter addresses crest gates. The final chapter covers energy dissipators.
