The fourth edition of this text aims to provide a concise but comprehensive introduction to the branch of applied microbiology which deals with the manufacture and control of sterile and non-sterile medicinal products. It also discusses antimicrobial drugs, their mode of action and the mechanisms of microbial resistance. This new edition contains a considerable amount of new material and several existing chapters appear under new authorship. In addition, more-clinically related data has been incorporated into the text with the introduction of chapters on the principles of pathogenicity and the clinical uses of antibiotics.
