Written in 1886, this novel examines the phenomenon of Americans in Europe, a theme that Henry James was to explore in the next two decades. It is also a love story and a valediction to youth when Colville resigns his editorship of a midwestern newspaper and returns to Florence, scene of his youthful passion.
