Description
This is the first of a two-volume work on the classical physics of optical interactions, offering a unified, consistent, and thorough presentation of the phenomenology of the interaction of light with matter. Volume 1 develops a broad range of special topics in linear optics which relate to material science and laser optics. These include electrodynamics in dilute media, macroscopic electrodynamics, optical activity, crystal optics, electro- optics, magneto-optics, bulk acousto-optics, and scattering. The early three chapters, on electromagnetic theory, normal modes of matter, and the interaction of light with matter, serve as a basic review of fundamentals. The remaining material is presented in self-contained chapters that can be read in any order.
