Smocking Design

Smocking, traditionally used to adorn countrymen's smocks, is popular with embroiderers. In its simplest form, it is a practical method of controlling fullness by means of stitchery over gathers, but much of its potential as an adaptable decorative technique remains to be fully exploited.
