Advances in Site Characterization

This proceedings, ""Advances in Site Characterization: Data Acquisition, Data Management, and Data Interpretation"", consists of papers presented at a symposium held at the ASCE National Convention in Dallas, Texas on October 27-28, 1993. One of the most important aspects of a successful geotechnical design is accuracy of site characterization. Accurate site characterization is not a simple task to accomplish. A great deal of uncertainty can be introduced depending on the method of exploration, data acquisition, sampling technique, testing method, data management, and interpretation. Better understanding of site characterization would be of great value for engineering projects including geo-environmental and transportation issues. Papers in the book present advances in site characterization through case studies and innovative methodology. Topics covered in the papers include use of databases, surface wave measurements, computer extrapolation for 3-D stratigraphy, collection of data for a project, use of laboratory data for site characterization, and probabilistic considerations.
