This second edition has been considerably expanded and brought up-to-date, and a new chapter has been incorporated into this edition covering biotechnology and analysis, including information on biosensors. The book also contains new material on therapeutic proteins, recombinant DNA technology, genetic fingerprinting, protein engineering and AIDs technology, together with larger sections on bioaction design and biotechnology legislation. It is aimed at undergraduates studying within this rapidly expanding and influential technology. Biotechnology is the industrial exploitation of biological systems or processes based on the ability of large biological molecules to recognize and catalyze a vast range of specific biochemical reactions under moderate conditions. This text also goes on to discuss the relation of biotechnology to energy, food and drink, chemistry, materials, the environment, genetics, medicine, analysis, agriculture and chemical engineering.
