Person
DuBose Heyward (1885-1940) was an American novelist, playwright, and poet associated with the Southern literary tradition. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Heyward drew upon the life and culture of the city in much of his work. Porgy, his best-known novel, achieved significant commercial and critical success and became the foundation for the Broadway play and the opera Porgy and Bess, with music by George Gershwin. Heyward's writing reflects a sustained interest in regional life, social conditions, and the complexities of the American South in the early twentieth century.
