Description
This is a collection of 40 papers spanning 40 years of work by Heilbronn, the celebrated mathematician whose principal research effort was in number theory. New commentaries are included along with essays written by famous living mathematicians, including A. Frohlich, Olga Taussky-Todd and H. Stark. Heilbronn's best-known work was in class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields, but his other contributions to number theory and analysis, especially to Waring's problem, L functions, sieve problems, etc are notable and had a strong influence on the development of these subjects. In particular, Heilbronn employed methods that have stimulated a good deal of research and are still used today.
