Description
Little has been written about the management of patients immediately after operations. Prophylaxis of many postoperative problems - such as heart attacks, pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis and confusion - can be initiated with proper care in the first critical hour or two following surgery. This book deals with all aspects of the recovery room - including equipment and administration. There is a major section on recognizing and treating emergencies. Other sections offer practical advice on every day matters, such as pain control, nausea and vomiting, and fluid balance. Much of the information in this section was previously scattered throughout medical literature. No other book covers every aspect of the recovery room in such a useful and readable form. This second edition has been largely rewritten, with entirely new sections on physiology and pharmacology. It remains a practical "hands on" manual to keep on the bench for day to day reference. The new information will enable trainees and junior staff to find solutions to many problems from basic principles, and more experienced staff will find it useful in the management of difficult patients.
This book is intended for anaesthetists' staff in the recovery room, all those involved in postoperative care.
