Description
In a typhoon on the South China Sea an American and a Chinese warship collide. Was this an accident? Or is this the prelude to Operation Pale Tiger? A long-rumoured Chinese plot to bring America to its knees...
MI6 Agent Emma Wilson is sent to Hong Kong, trailing a Principal at Crator Capital - a leading London hedge fund rumoured to be linked to the Chinese.
What she discovers there is something more sinister and more dangerous than she could have imagined. Back in London, Detective Anne Perry is investigating the strange death of an analyst at the same hedge fund. She soon suspects that this death was no accident, and as she pushes for the truth is drawn deeper into a world dirty money, corrupt bankers and cold-blooded killers.
Washington meanwhile is rocked by the discovery of a huge cache of opioids at a jungle lab with apparent links to Crator Capital. The CIA and the State Department join the dots. Is this what Operation Pale Tiger looks like? Chinese revenge, served very cold, for the Opium Wars of long ago?
As a massive US Battle Fleet steams towards the Taiwan Strait, Anne and Emma are finally thrown together in a race against time to uncover the truth behind Operation Pale Tiger. Is this really the Chinese? Or are there other, hidden forces at work determined to provoke a war between China and America at any cost?
The world stands on the brink of war - and the clock is ticking.

Reviews / Votes
This book was so exciting that I read it in one 24-hour period - I had to find out what happened! The characters were believable (not one-dimensional or those typical in most thrillers). Still, they were also aligned to excellent descriptions of the locations where you felt you were there with them. What I liked a lot about this book was the use of technology as a base assumption to the plot without the reader needing to understand 'techie' concepts. It is so horribly possible that it is chilling. The pace of this book is exciting - move over Jeffrey Archer; Mike Harrison is the new contender! I cannot wait till the next one is out. Sheila Mellor. I loved this action-packed thriller and found that I could NOT put it down once I dived in and got to grips with the places, times and characters. It is full of vivid descriptions and written in a tight, pacey timescale. Thrillers are not my usual genre, but Paper Tiger has converted me. The plot was woven together masterfully, with twists and turns that kept me guessing. All the locations- particularly Hong Kong- were so roundly described that they evoked a realistic sense of place, and the characters came into focus in a way that made me wish to read more of them. Fabulous. Maria Lobb. It was a thoroughly compelling read, which I rattled through. Like all good thrillers, I wasn't sure I was keeping pace with the plot initially, but the different threads cleverly came together at just the right moment. Descriptions of the locations and character development were expertly handled, and I found the interaction with Theodora surprisingly credible. Bravo, Mr Harrison, a great debut, and I very much look forward to novel number 2. James Stileman. It is a genuinely gripping read, grabs your full attention from the start, and keeps a tight hold through to the end, hard to put down. It is very modern and of the moment as it intertwines hedge funds, security services and geopolitics and interplays the various characters from those worlds. Combined with unnerving twists of gothic and futuristic, it very much adds to the drama. Jeremy Sigee. Mike Harrison's debut novel is most impressive. He is a storyteller and a wordsmith. This thriller's characters draw you in, whilst the plot keeps you guessing with its many twists and turns. Bring on the sequel!! Hugh Lenon: A highly entertaining, brilliantly written page-turner, which proved challenging to put down. Reminiscent of some of the best Ian Fleming - a thriller which would quickly move onto the big screen ... will be eagerly waiting for a sequel or the author's second novel. There are some great characters (more on Sebastian, please!), and in the middle of a strong cast, Alexa ultimately steals the show. When I thought we desperately needed proper escapism with a new, modern-day Bond, we have MI6's Emma Wilson. I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I did. A Cambridge lawyer, Mike Harrison has spent 30 years at the heart of global financial markets. His work has taken him around the world, from the steel splendour of Manhattan to the stately squares of Moscow, from Frankfurt's solemn boardrooms to the steamy streets of Singapore. Harrison incorporates what he knows into his writing, lending authenticity and credibility to this work. The novel's focus on the tensions between the United States and China and the devastating opioid crisis serves as an accurate foreshadowing for the politics of today.
