Alexia Windrain, a young enchantress, and her best friend Kaal, the last of the dragons, have both quickly been caught in the midst of a war that threatens the existence of all magic, and the people with the talent to use it. With the shadow of the marauding Bright Souls looming over the human lands and slowly seeping into the magical Forbidden Land, the two now must journey back to the other side of the mountains, to the world of mortals and the town of Stoneblight, the last true haven for sorcerers of all kinds. There, they meet the leader of the largest and most secret resistance to the threat, Caltra of the Black Shade Alliance, who also happens to be a half-dragon with a story of her own. Within her world, Alexia and Kaal seek to strengthen themselves, with the promise of helping the Alliance in turn. But with the Bright Souls slowly invading Stoneblight, an upcoming celebration that may change the leadership of the kingdom, and Kaal's uncertainty about the trust they should really have in Caltra, will the two be able to see their quest through? Meanwhile, Gareth Windrain is swiftly moving up in the ranks of the Bright Souls, which he'd hoped to infiltrate until he could find his imprisoned wife, Sarah. But as he wrestles with the guilt of having to be an accomplice in their crimes against the magic-blooded, he gains new hope from his daughter's most recent letter...but with the change of seasons on the horizon, there may be an attempt on the kingdom of Havenston itself...will he still risk his own soul to continue his search, or will he risk his life when he knows his daughter may be closer still?
