Dr. Ibrahim Haddad is Palm's Director of Open Source. He manages and executes company-wide, cross-functional Open Source strategy, implements and executes internal and external Open Source processes, and leads the Open Source Review Board which serves as a clearinghouse for all Open Source activities. Furthermore, Dr. Haddad is responsible for creating and managing Palm's Open Source communications and messaging to relevant Open Source communities, industry consortia, customers, key partners and developers, industry analysts and press.
Prior to Palm, Dr. Haddad was Director of Technology for the Embedded Systems, Open Source and Linux Technology Group at Motorola (CTO Office). In this role, he was responsible for defining and developing the requirements for Motorola's Open Source initiatives and driving technical contributions to the product teams. He represented Motorola in Linux and Open Source forums driving Motorola's requirements and overall strategy. He was also involved with customers and partners on matters related to embedded systems, and open source software technologies and roadmaps. Dr. Haddad was the winner of the Big Idea Innovation Award in Recognition of Leadership and Vision at the Motorola Innovation Conference in 2007.
Before joining Motorola, Dr. Haddad managed the Carrier Grade Linux and Mobile Linux Initiatives at the Open Source Development Labs (the Linux Foundation) and promoted the development and adoption of Linux and Open Source software in the communications industry. He was also the creator and facilitator of the "Carriers and Network Equipment Providers Forum", a vendor-neutral forum for carriers, service providers, network equipment providers and telecommunication equipment manufacturers, to discuss common challenges, exchange best practices and deployment experiences, and preview new technologies that relate to Linux and Open Source based platforms.
Prior to joining OSDL, Dr. Haddad was a Senior Researcher at the "Research and Innovation" department of Ericsson's corporate unit of research where he was involved with the server system architecture for 3G wireless IP networks and contributed to Ericsson's open platform efforts.
Dr. Haddad is co-author of two books on Red Hat Linux and Fedora and Technical Editor for four books on Linux System Administration, Fedora Linux and Ubuntu Linux. He is a Contributing Editor of the Linux Journal and Enterprise Open Source Magazine and a frequent panelist and keynote speaker on business and technical aspects of open source software at major conferences. He is author of over 100 business, research and technical publications, and served on numerous conference and review committees.
Dr. Haddad will begin lecturing at the University of California at Berkeley on topics related to Open Source, starting Summer 2009.
Haddad received a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Lebanese American University (Byblos, Lebanon) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Concordia University (Montreal, Canada), where he was awarded the J. W. McConnell Memorial Graduate Fellowship and the Concordia University 25th Anniversary Fellowship for academic excellence. Dr. Haddad is a member of Concordia University J.W. McConnell Memorial Graduate Fellows Society helping young scholars by lending them support at a critical moment in their educational development and mentoring new members who are starting their careers.
Dr. Haddad is fluent in Arabic, English and French.
