She was a volunteer teacher for the Boston Red Cross English as a second Language program, teaching English to native speakers of Spanish and Portuguese. She lives in New York City.

She has completed a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Ferreira has been teaching at Bridgewater State University since 2001, where she is a tenured professor and former chair of the foreign languages department.
