The informal sector plays a crucial role in the economy not only in terms of employment opportunities, but also in terms of poverty alleviation. Unorganized sector provides earning opportunities for a large number of people, plays a central role in the developing economy like India, in terms of employment, national domestic product, saving and capital formation. 93 percent unorganized sector workers, which are far from economic development, due to the failure of state policy to bridge the social security gap between organized and unorganized sector. Unorganized sector is immensely vast and heterogeneous, designing social security for them requires a comprehensive and broad study of all category of unorganized sector. Rickshaw pullers fall under this category and they are one of the most vulnerable sections of society and seeking needs for social security. The book examines the socio-economic background, working condition, occupational illnesses, available social security scheme for them and their paying capacity for priority needs of the sample rickshaw pullers, factors influencing the annual labour supply of the sample respondent¿s rickshaw pullers.
