Anaerobic Digestion X

Anaerobic digestion has entered a phase of intensified interest and activity, especially for the management of organic municipal solid wastes, biosolids and agricultural wastes. The ever-increasing demand for sustainable development has stimulated political interest in measures which will decrease pollution and greenhouse gas production by human activities. In this respect, anaerobic digestion is clearly one of the answers since it reduces carbon pollution, provides peat-type organic amendment and "clean" fertilizers, and generates a "green" energy carrier. From being technology-pushed, anaerobic digestion is now becoming market-pulled, owing to societal concerns and demands. This renewed activity was reflected in the size and scope of the 10th Anaerobic Digestion Congress, with nearly six hundred oral and poster presentation. From this 76 articles have been selected, after full peer review, for these proceedings. As well as authoritative keynote papers, they include new work on microbial ecology; hydrogen; pre- and post-treatment; waste and sludge treatment; domestic wastewaters; industrial wastewater treatment and bioremediation; modelling, control and instrumentation; and technical development and sustainability. These articles represent the latest ideas and effective practices relating to knowledge and technologies in anaerobic digestion, ranging from fundamental research to large-scale applications, and will prove an invaluable reference source for research scientists, municipal, industrial and environmental engineers with an interest in this field.
