Das erste Jahrbuch der Bayerischen Staatssammlung für Anthropologie und Paläoanatomie in München enthält ein Vorwort der Herausgeber, einen historischen Überblick (Grupe, Peters) und 18 Aufsätze. Diese wurden ursprünglich auf einem internationalen Workshop unter dem Titel "Entschlüsselung alter Knochen: Das Forschungspotential bioarchäologischer Sammlungen" präsentiert, der im Juli 2002 anläßlich des 100-jährigen Bestehens der anthropologischen Sammlung stattfand. Das Buch gliedert sich in 6 Kapitel zu bioarchäologischen Sammlungen, ihrem öffentlichen Nachhall (2 Beiträge) und Forschungspotential (3), zur tierischen Umwelt des Menschen (2), der Entschlüsselung von Knochenfunden (3), dem sozio-kulturellen Aspekt und seinen modernen Implikationen (2) und laufenden Forschungsprojekten der anthropologischen und paläoanatomischen Sammlung (6). Die geographische Spannweite reicht von Peru bis Mitteleuropa, in den Sudan und die Sahara, zeitlich werden (Be)funde vom Paläolithikum bis ins Mittelalter diskutiert. Inhaltlich werden z.B. Sammlungen, Faunen, Domestikation, Knochenartefakte, Menschenknochen, Krankheiten und Ernährung untersucht.
The first volume of the yearbook of the newly formed Bavarian State Collection of Anthropology and Palaeoanatomy in Munich contains a preface of the editors, a brief history of the Collection (Grupe, Peters) and 18 papers originally presented at an international workshop under the title of "Deciphering Ancient Bones: The Research Potential of Bioarchaeological Collections" held in Munich in July 2002 to mark the centennial of the Anthropological Collection. The book is divided into 6 sections on research collections and the public echo (2 articles), the research potential of bioarchaeological collections (3 articles), man and his animal world (2 articles), deciphering ancient bones (3 articles), the socio-cultural aspect and modern implications (2 articles), and current projects of the Collection of Anthropology and Palaeoanatomy (6 articles). Geographically, a region from Peru to Central Europe, Sudan and the Sahara is covered, chronologically finds and features from the Palaeolithic until the Middle Ages are discussed. Objects of study are e.g. museum collections, faunal remains, characteristics of domestication, bone artefacts, human skeletal remains, diseases and nutritional conditions.
