"Chasing the Horizon - Why winning the lottery won't make you happier" explores the "Hedonic Treadmill" (Hedonic Adaptation). Psychological research, most notably the 1978 study by Brickman, Coates, and Janoff-Bulman, compares lottery winners with accident victims who became paraplegics. Psychologist Jessica Green explains the shocking result: After a year, both groups returned to roughly the same baseline level of happiness. Humans are wired to adapt. It argues that chasing external spikes in joy is futile because the goalpost always moves.
