Mit den vorliegenden Essays wird der Versuch unternommen, dem Spätwerk Wittgensteins gerecht zu werden. Nach etwas mehr als fünfzig Jahren seit dem Tod des Philosophen sollte es nun möglich sein, sich ein zutreffenderes Bild von ihm zu machen. Die Essaysammlung berücksichtigt alle wichtigeren späteren Schriften Wittgensteins. Sie präsentiert ein breites inhaltliches Spektrum, verfolgt dabei aber ein einheitliches Ziel und erfüllt damit alle Anforderungen einer Standardmonographie. Aber ein Essay in einer Sammlung ist kein Kapitel eines Buches und die hier vorliegenden Essays sind sehr unterschiedlich. Einige Stellungnahmen sind höchst kritisch. Andere sind unkonventionell und lassen in ihrer Treue zu Wittgenstein zu wünschen übrig. Und dann zeugen viele von großer Übereinstimmung mit Wittgenstein, weisen jedoch gelegentlich auf Schwächen des Philosophen, aber auch auf mögliche Verbesserungen hin.
Brian Grant verfolgt in diesen Essays einen sehr ungewöhnlichen Weg durch Wittgensteins spätere Schriften und durch die zugehörige Sekundärliteratur. Dadurch tragen die Texte eine ganz klare und unverwechselbare Handschrift.
These essays are an attempt to come to terms with the later Wittgenstein. It is a little more than fifty years since Wittgenstein died and we ought to be able by now to get a fairly clear fix on him. This collection of essays takes into account all of the more important of Wittgenstein's later writings, so it has as much comprehensiveness and unity of purpose as a standard book-length commentary. But an essay in a collection is not a chapter of a book and there are essays of very different kinds here. A few commentaries on Wittgenstein are highly and uniformly critical. A few are equally shrill and unconvincing in their allegiance. And then a lot of them are largely in agreement but with the occasional suggestion of some failing or possible improvement.
Brian Grant traces, in these essays, a quite particular path through Wittgenstein's later writings as well as the secondary literature. So these essays come with a quite clear, an unmistakable signature.
