Description
Lights! Camera! Action and the brain: The Use of Film in Education is about an innovative pedagogy whereby performing arts and digital production play a key role in teaching and learning. The book combines theory and practice; as such, it lays solid neurological foundations for film and media literacy, and provides several relevant practical applications from worldwide scholars. The book contains thirteen chapters three of which address a number of theoretical issues related to the camera and the brain while the remaining ten are practical illustrations of the extent to which film and video are used as pedagogical tools. In the book preface, Nikos Theodosakis, author of 'The Director in the Classroom', writes that the book contributors 'have built a wonderful bridge for us to travel over'. In fact, the book chapters transcend age restrictions to include diverse age groups, children and young adults. The topics range from learning language and philosophy to learning about one's self, one's environment, and one's cultural identity. Much more importantly, the book addresses the needs of regular and special needs learners. Arts in general, and films in particular, are shown to display salient and dynamic roles in appealing to a wide variety of regular and special needs learners. In short, the book is highly beneficial to educators and to education managers; it 'will have the power to change teaching and the way the curriculum is perceived' for several generations to come.

"This unique and thoughtful collection of essays provides the reader with an array of creative uses of film and video in teaching and learning. Film and video are natural hooks in engaging learners. The authors of this book have provided a wonderful entry that uncovers theoretical, practical and philosophical bases for integrating film and video throughout the curriculum in multiple settings."- Professor Merryl Ruth Goldberg, Harvard Graduate School of Education and Wheelock College, USA'Now we know that the brain loves music, poetry, and movement 'Lights! Camera! Action and the Brain: The Use of Film in Education' is a thrilling new addition, and I leave it to Emily Dickinson to express how I feel 'I dwell in possibility'. I feel certain that this book will open wonderful doors on how to use this new powerful learning tool in the classroom.' Professor Carolyn Graham, New York University, USA."This is a very important and timely book. The use of film and other screen media is ubiquitous and is accelerating. The book offers a wide range of international perspectives on this phenomenon exploring film as language, a way of researching and an increasingly popular means of creative expression and finding a voice, especially with young people. The pedagogic value of film and media literacy is clearly demonstrated and the reader will find excellent scholarship and practical, inspirational ideas for the use of film in educational settings. This book will have the power to change teaching and the way the curriculum is perceived."- Professor Shaun Hugh, Expert in Educational Leadership and Management, University of Worcester, England'This book makes a clear case for the inclusion of media literacy in educational institutions, not simply as a subject matter, but also as a means of conveying knowledge and producing much more sensible and creative citizens." Professor Linda R. Waugh, Ph.D., University of Arizona''In his book Lights! Camera! Action and the Brain: The Use of Film in Education, Bahloul compiles 13 chapters written by academics and experts from around the world, each looking at various ways in which film and media literacy can have a profound influence on different areas of teaching.'' - Alex Ritman, 'The National' (April, 2013).More details
