Practising the Art of Writing

This text should help apprentice writers develop their skills by giving confidence and practice in a wide range of genres and by heightening their awareness of themselves as writers. It is addressed directly to the student, while recognizing and drawing on the critical role of the teacher. It includes an array of extracts and complete works by authors as diverse as Ernest Hemmingway, Brian McCabe, Muriel Spark, Harold Pinter and George Mackay Brown. Key texts illustrate points and alert students to the relationship between writer and reader. There are also chapters on narrative writing, monologue and drama, and personal and reflective writing.
