Fourteen years later, the two men meet again at the time of the Suez Crisis, with the Soviet Union preparing to invade Hungary. Robert, unhappily married to a beautiful artist and with a scheming aristocratic mistress, is a Foreign Office official, while Maurice is a journalist on the communist Daily Worker. The friends find their loyalties - to one another and to their country - torn apart as the world teeters on the brink of yet another war.

Stephen Glover was co-founder of The Independent and founding editor of the Independent on Sunday. He has worked as a columnist for the Evening Standard, Daily Telegraph, Spectator and Independent and now writes a column for the Daily Mail. He is the author of Paper Dreams, about the founding of The Independent, and the novel Splash! He was editor of The Penguin Book of Journalism.
