The author recounts his childhood in the Tyneside of the 1930s, "when you could go shopping with a ha'penny and spend all day at the Hoppings for nothing at all (if you knew how)". It was a struggle from day to day with weekly visits to the pawnshop but there were simple pleasures to enjoy too.
