James B. Gilbert is professor of history at the University of Maryland and taught at Amsterdam University and the University of Paris. He has written numerous books, including Another Chance: America After World War II, The Pursuit of Liberty, and Perfect Cities: Chicago's Utopias in the 1890's, which was a New York Times Notable Book of 1991.
