Der Band bietet einen systematischen Katalog aller bisherigen Prospektions- und Ausgrabungsergebnisse zu insgesamt 32 Erdwerken im Braunschweiger Land [EWBSL], einer seit 1989 entdeckten und einzigartig dichten "Erdwerkslandschaft" zwischen Harz und Aller. Die Monumente entstanden Massenspektrometriedaten [AMS] zufolge in zwei Hauptphasen, mehr westlich um 4200 / 4100 und weiter östlich um 3700 / 3600 v.Chr., und gehören der späten Michelsberger Kultur an [MK IV-V]. Sie finden sich z.T. in großer Zahl dicht benachbart in drei Hauptlagetypen, großenteils Ökotopengrenzlagen, häufig an historischen Fernwegen. Aufgrund der verbesserten Datengrundlage wird die ältere Deutung als zentrale Ritualplätze mit Fest- und Bestattungsfunktion sowie ritualisiertem Austausch mit fremden Gemeinschaften durch ein neues Interpretationsmodell ersetzt. Demnach handelt es sich um aufwändig gestaltete Anlagen zur Handhabung großer Rinderherden im Rahmen von Transhumanz, die mit der praktischen und rituellen Zusammenführung der Bauern- und Hirtenkomponente der Bevölkerung im Rahmen von Festen, sozialen und religiösen Aktivitäten einherging.
The volume presents a systematic catalogue of all survey and excavation results on 32 ditched enclosures in the Brunswick Region [short: EWBSL], a uniquely dense monument landscape between the Harz Mountains and the river Aller discovered from 1989 onwards. Due to AMS-dating, the monuments originated in two main phases, more westerly around 4200 / 4100 and more easterly around 3700 / 3600 B.C., and thus belong to the late Michelsberg Culture [MK IV-V]. They are partly found in great numbers and closely adjacent in three main terrain types, largely transitional zones between different ecotopes, often related to historical long-distance traffic routes. On this improved data basis, the old interpretation as central ritual sites for the purpose of feasting and burial including ritual exchange with foreign communities is replaced by a new model of interpretation. According to this, the monuments were elaborately built complexes for the handling of large cattle herds in the context of transhumance, which was combined with the practical and ritual reunion of the farming and the herding components of the population in the context of feasts, social and religious activities.
