See How The Land Lies

Das Künstlerduo Gabriela Gerber und Lukas Bardill, das im Jahr 2005 mit dem Manor Kunstpreis Chur ausgezeichnet wurde, arbeitet mit den Medien Installation, Wandzeichnung, Fotografie und Video. Wie der Titel der Ausstellung antönt, kreisen ihre Arbeiten um Begriffe wie Landschaft, Verortung und Lüge. In ihren ironischen und tiefgründigen Arbeiten verhandeln sie einen neuen Landschaftsbegriff, der kulturelle, kunsthistorische, ethische aber auch raumplanerische und landwirtschaftliche Aspekte einschliesst. Als Künstler fragen sie bewusst nach der Authentizität der Landschaft im Alpenraum sowie danach, wie viel Landschaft es tatsächlich braucht, damit ein Landschaftsbild im Kopf entsteht. Dazu verwenden sie Versatzstücke aus ihrem landwirtschaftlichen Umfeld, verfremden sie in ihrem Aussehen, so dass sie als reduziertes Zeichen Landschaft bedeuten und herauf beschwören. Oder sie entfernen von einem Landschaftsausschnitt soweit alle zivilisatorischen Spuren, bis er einem Ideal entspricht, das es so allerdings gar nicht gibt. Indem sie trügerische Vorstellungen von Landschaft als Gegenpol zur Kultur oder zum urbanen Raum thematisieren, entlarven sie diese letztlich als Wunschbilder. Auf ihrer Suche nach inneren und äusseren Landschaftsbildern treiben sie die Verknappung auf das Zeichenhafte voran, ganz im Bestreben, sich dem Kern der Vorstellung von Landschaft anzunähern.
In ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung in einem Schweizer Kunstmuseum zeigen Gabriela Gerber und Lukas Bardill Fotografien, Videoarbeiten sowie die eigens für die Ausstellung geschaffene Installation 'Hasenstand', einen Übungsschiesstand für Niederwildjagd, in dem für einmal nicht der Hase, sondern der Mensch aufgeschreckt wird.
Gabriela Gerber (*1970, Schiers) und Lukas Bardill (*1968, Chur) arbeiten seit 1997 als Künstlerpaar zusammen. Sie leben und arbeiten in Maienfeld und Zürich. ------- The artist duo Gabriela Gerber and Lukas Bardill, who were awarded the Manor Kunstpreis in 2005, work with installations, wall-drawings, photography, and video. As the title of the exhibition suggests, their work revolves around such concepts as landscape, localisation and lies. In their ironic as well as profound work they ponder on a new concept of landscape that includes cultural, art historical, ethical, as well as agricultural and land use planning aspects. As artists they consciously question the authenticity of alpine landscape, and also how much landscape it actually takes to create a mental picture of landscape. For this they use settings taken from their own agricultural region, alienate them in their appearance so that they conjure up and come to signify landscape as symbol. Or they cleanse a section of landscape of all marks of civilisation until it corresponds to an ideal, which in reality does not exist. By dealing with delusive representations of landscape as a counterpoint to culture or to urban space, they finally unmask these as an illusion. In their search for inner and outer landscape images they promote this condensation towards the emblematic, to purposefully draw closer to the core of a landscape concept.
In their first individual exhibition at a Swiss museum Gabriela Gerber and Lukas Bardill show photographs, video work, and a practice shooting range for small game hunting called "Hasenstand" - an installation especially conceived for the exhibition - in which for once not the hare but man himself is terrified.
Gabriela Gerber (*1979, Schiers) and Lukas Bardill (*1968, Chur) have been working together as artists since 1997. They live and work in Maienfeld and Zurich.
