Art is a serious game

Geta Bratescu is considered the grande dame of conceptual art in Romania. The 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 introduced her to a wider audience; art magazine BLUE featured her in detail in their December/January issue 2015/16. This comprehensive catalog is published on the occasion of the retrospective organized by the Hamburger Kunsthalle celebrating her 90th birthday, featuring important key works and work series spanning more than six decades. It is the first museum retrospective by the artist outside of her home country. Memory and history, historical deposition and organic growth processes, conformity and deviation, self-questioning and -assertion are among the issues that Geta Bratescu has repeatedly worked with and scrutinized in the course of her long artistic career. The work of this Bucharest artist is extremely diverse and varied in style. Geta Bratescu's work is abstract and at other times representational, fragmented as well as three dimensional, and she makes use of different media such as drawing, photography, film, textile work and sculpture. She sees herself primarily as a draftsman in the service of the line, and describes her colorful paper collages as »drawing with scissors«, and her textile works as »drawing with the sewing machine«. At the same time, in her abstract work series the »Cut Outs«, the artist's interest is directed at the relation between line and surface, whereby she elaborates on this relationship in seemingly endless sequences and modulations. Fascinated by literature and philosophy and in a well-informed manner, she has devoted herself to the great figures of world literature such as Medea, Dido and Faust. For many decades, Geta Bratescu has been responsible for the graphic design of the magazine Secolul 20 (today Secolul 21), the main cultural and intellectual publication in Romania, which she still remains loyal to.

L'Art est un jeu sérieux

Geta Bratescu est la grande dame de l'art conceptuel roumain. C'est la 55^e biennale de Venise qui l'a fait connaître du grand public en 2013 et la revue d'art BLAU lui rend abondamment hommage dans son numéro de décembre/janvier 2015/16. Le catalogue complet qui paraît aujourd'hui, à l'occasion de l'exposition organisée par la Kunsthalle de Hambourg pour son 90^e anniversaire, rassemble ses ouvres-clé et les séries les plus importantes depuis plus de soixante ans. C'est la première rétrospective qu'un musée consacre à l'artiste hors de son pays natal. Souvenir et histoire, processus de sédimentation historique et de croissance organique, conformité et divergences, auto-interrogation et affirmation de soi, tels sont les thèmes que Geta Bratescu n'a cessé de traiter à nouveau et de remettre en question au cours de son long parcours artistique. L'ouvre de la créatrice, qui vit à Bucarest, est d'une diversité exceptionnelle et ne saurait être attribuée à un courant artistique en soi. Geta Bratescu travaille aussi bien l'abstrait que le figuratif, les petits éléments que l'occupation de l'espace complet, elle utilise différents médias tels que dessin, photographie, film, tissus et sculpture. Elle se voit elle-même surtout comme une dessinatrice au service de la ligne et décrit ses collages de papier coloré hauts en couleurs comme du « dessin au ciseau » ou ses travaux sur tissu comme du « dessin à la machine à coudre ». En même temps, ses nouvelles séries abstraites, les « Cut Outs » (découpages), témoignent de son intérêt pour la relation entre ligne et surface qu'elle décline sans fin dans des alignements et modulations sans fin apparente. Fascinée par la littérature et la philosophie, elle se consacre en érudite aux grands personnages de la littérature mondiale tels que Médée, Didon ou Faust. Geta Bratescu a également été responsable pendant plusieurs dizaines d'années de la conception graphique du magazine Secolul 20 (aujourd'hui Secolul 21), le principal organe culturel et intellectuel de Roumanie auquel elle est restée fidèle jusqu'à aujourd'hui.

Kunst ist ein ernstes Spiel

Geta Bratescu gilt als die Grande Dame der konzeptuellen Kunst Rumäniens. Einem breiten Publikum ist sie durch die 55. Biennale 2013 in Venedig bekannt geworden; das Kunstmagazin BLAU hat sie ausführlich in ihrer Dezember/Januar-Ausgabe 2015/16 gewürdigt. Der umfassende Katalog erscheint nun anlässlich der von der Hamburger Kunsthalle zu ihrem 90. Geburtstag ausgerichteten Werkschau, die wichtige Schlüsselwerke und Werkserien aus über sechs Jahrzehnten versammelt. Es ist die erste retrospektiv angelegte Museumsausstellung der Künstlerin außerhalb ihres Heimatlandes. Erinnerung und Geschichte, historische Ablagerungs- und organische Wachstumsprozesse, Konformität und Abweichung, Selbstbefragung und -behauptung sind Themen, die Geta Bratescu im Laufe ihres langen künstlerischen Werdegangs immer wieder neu bearbeitet und hinterfragt hat. Das Werk der in Bukarest lebenden Künstlerin ist außerordentlich vielfältig und lässt sich nicht allein einer Stilrichtung zuordnen. Geta Bratescu arbeitet sowohl abstrakt als auch gegenständlich, kleinteilig wie raumgreifend, und sie bedient sich unterschiedlicher Medien wie Zeichnung, Fotografie, Film, Stoffarbeit und Skulptur. Sie selbst versteht sich vor allem als Zeichnerin im Dienst der Linie und beschreibt ihre farbenfrohen Papiercollagen als ein »Zeichnen mit der Schere«, ihre Stoffarbeiten als ein »Zeichnen mit der Nähmaschine«. Zugleich richtet sich das Interesse der Künstlerin in neuen abstrakten Werkserien, den »Cut Outs« (Scherenschnitte), auf die Relation zwischen Linie und Fläche, wobei sie diese Beziehung in scheinbar unendlichen Reihungen und Modulationen durchdekliniert. Fasziniert von Literatur und Philosophie, widmet sie sich kenntnisreich den großen Figuren der Weltliteratur wie Medea, Dido oder Faust. Über viele Jahrzehnte war Geta Bratescu zudem für die grafische Gestaltung des Magazins Secolul 20 (heute Secolul 21) verantwortlich, des wichtigsten kulturellen und intellektuellen Publikationsorgans Rumäniens, dem sie bis heute die Treue hält.
