Isabel already intended to marry Gilberto when, to her surprise, Carlos, her former fiancé, who had gone to fight in Italy during the Second World War and had been declared dead, returned after five years, filled with love and demanding their engagement. But Isabel no longer loved him. Carlos suffered and rebelled, yet he didn't give up.
