Description
Wired Our Own Way is the first anthology of personal essays written by autistic Irish adults.
2025 figures show that one in twenty Irish schoolchildren are now identified as autistic, and society's understanding of neurodiversity is evolving rapidly. As awareness grows, many adults are also discovering this aspect of themselves, finding greater clarity and self-compassion in the process.
This bestselling anthology explores the profound impact of receiving a diagnosis and highlights the wide range of experiences within the neurodivergent community in Ireland. Through deeply personal and insightful essays, the contributors reveal the many ways this identity shapes their lives - proving there is no single way of being autistic.
From meltdowns to mental health, from early diagnoses to late-in-life revelations, and from cultural stereotypes to workplace challenges, this collection offers a rich, multifaceted perspective on life beyond the neurotypical lens. A celebration of individuality, resilience, and self-discovery, it shines a light on voices that deserve to be heard.

What Niamh Garvey has put together in Wired Our Own Way is a vitally important and beautiful shared canvas - a portrait and landscape of autistic-ness painted by many hands, with pools of darkness, flashes of bright light and sweeps of genuine brilliance. The shared voice of the book is a clear image portraying the simplest, yet most complicated of messages: here we are.Garvey has put together a truly unique and broad spectrum of voices here, from as many walks of life as possible. If you are looking for a book that illustrates how autistic people live, and laugh, and love, and struggle, then this is one of the best starting points I could suggest. You will step away from it dazed and illuminated by everything you saw. -- Pete Wharmby * Irish Independent * This book is the first collection of personal essays written by autistic Irish adults and is also an amazing initiative to give autistic voices the space to be open and honest. All of the essays are so moving and each story is so unique. This collection is a must read for all brain types. -- Brid Conroy * Mayo News *
