Nigel Gann has worked with school governing bodies and senior managers since 1979 and is regarded as one of the leading authorities on school governance in the UK. He trained as a teacher, working in secondary schools to headship level. From 1989 he was an independent consultant in education and community development, after which he worked as Senior Consultant with CfBT Education Services, one of the leading third-sector providers of education services. His principal work is on school improvement, working with senior management teams and governing bodies of primary and secondary schools, and setting up strategies for planning, monitoring and evaluating school performance. He was consultant to the BBC Open University Governing Schools series; in 2001, he completed a twelve-programme series for the BBC World Service called Making Schools Work.
