Description
Appropriate for upper level undergraduate and graduate level courses in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Materials Science and Engineering. It is also useful as a reference for Engineers and Chemists working in the synthetic plastics and chemical process industries.
This book presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the current state of polymer science and technology and emerging areas of growth. In addition to synthetic polymer chemistry, the book also covers the properties of polymers in solutions and in the melt, rubber, and solid states, surveying all important categories of plastics. It includes detailed coverage of both polymer processing principles and the latest polymer applications in a wide range of industries-including medicine, biotechnology, chemicals, and electronics.

Dr. Joel R. Fried is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Florida State. Previously he was Professor and the Wright Brothers Endowed Chair in Nanomaterials at the University of Dayton. He is also Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering and Fellow of the Graduate School at the University of Cincinnati where he served as the Director of the Polymer Research Center and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. He received BS degrees in Biology and in Chemical Engineering and a ME degree in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MS and PhD degrees in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). At the University of Cincinnati, he has held positions of Director of the Polymer Research Center and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Cincinnati. Previously to his academic appointment at Cincinnati in 1978, Professor Fried was an Associate Staff Member at the Corporate Research and Development Center of GE (Schenectady, NY) and later a Senior Research Engineer at the Corporate Research and Development Center of Monsanto (St. Louis) focusing on the development of the new polymeric membranes for gas separations. Professor Fried has authored more than 150 papers, book chapters, and patents and the widely used textbook, Polymer Science and Technology, of which a 3rd edition will be published by Prentice Hall in early 2014.
