Description
A detailed analysis of British and American policies on Greece and the effect of those policies on the development of the Cold War. Major topics include Churchill's stubborn refusal, against Foreign Office recommendations, to force the Greek King to agree to a plebiscite on the future of the monarchy, until this problem led to the 1944 civil war, and the American refusal to assist the British in their efforts to ensure a democratic and stable postwar Greece, coupled with Roosevelt and Stettinius's unwarranted interference in Greek affairs. The second half of the work traces the post-war change in the American attitude towards Greece, the background to the British decision to abandon its support of Greece, and the American acceptance of the burden, with emphasis on the significance of the Truman Doctrine to the origins of the Cold War. The work is based primarily on official records of the British and American Governments.
