Description
This major book is a comprehensive, non-technical overview of the principles of environmental and resource economics. The economic causes and consequences of environmental and resource problems are thoroughly addressed by a distinguished group of authors who also provide a comprehensive assessment of environmental policy instruments and corporate responses to environmental problems. The economic causes of environmental and resource problems are the major theme of the first part of this volume which also discusses links to such important areas as growth theory, national accounting and public policymaking. The goals and principles of environmental policy are addressed in the second part which provides a comprehensive overview of the various instruments applied in practice. Means of analysing the economic implications of environmental policy are also discussed as well as the valuation of environmental quality and environmental policy in an international context. The third part shifts the focus to business decision makers to examine the involvement of firms with the regulatory process and the pay-offs provided by this involvement. Environmental technology development and implementation as well as the solid waste problem are addressed in the final part.
Comprehensive and authoritative, Principles of Environmental and Resource Economics offers a non-technical state-of-the-art review which will be widely used as a teaching tool for students and a reference point for practitioners and researchers.

Reviews / Votes
'This book is a timely, scholarly and important collection of essays written by an international group of 19 eminent academics and practitioners. . . . It is very well written, ambitious and packed full of valuable factual and technical material, the eclectic nature reflecting the very broad and differing interests of each contributor. Despite the scope and breadth, which are phenomenal, the thematic nature ensures that each section is systematically organised, each following on well from the previous one. . . . this book is a worthy and welcome addition to an already growing field. . . it will prove very useful to a wide readership. . . an excellent, scholarly read.' -- Joyce Liddle, Local Environment 'As economic and environmental policy have become more firmly entwined, the need for a succinct, but accurate guide to the underlying principles of environmental economics has become more acute. This book should fill the need. Nineteen related essays written by authorities in the field lay out the issues in a simple, but not simplistic, manner.' -- Tom Tietenberg, Colby College, US 'An excellent addition to the environmental and resource economics literature . . . Recommended for upper-division undergraduate through professional audience.' -- M. Morgan-Davie, Choice 'The latest instalment in Edward Elgar's excellent 'New Horizons in Environmental Economics' series - Principles of Environmental and Resource Economics - sets out to provide a comprehensive introduction to the economic causes and consequences of environmental problems and succeeds in doing so admirably. . . the book is a good one and I commend it.' -- Anthony G.
