Description
Made up of the old counties of Wigtownshire and The Stewartry, Galloway covers a vast swathe of Scotland's quiet southwest corner. This under-discovered area offers 260km of coast, full of sandy beaches and towering cliffs, lonely heather-clad moors and quiet hills. Add to this plenty of wildlife, a rich artistic heritage, strong spiritual influences and a climate kissed by the warming Gulf Stream, and you have a region beckoning to be visited. Darren Flint and Donald Greig's handpicked selection of 40 walks reveals the sheer variety of landscapes that makes Galloway so special - from the Mull of Galloway, Scotland?s most southerly point, to the sweeping Nith Estuary, via Merrick, Southern Scotland's highest hill, and plenty of hidden corners.

Darren Flint has worked across the UK and Australia before recently settling as a relative newcomer in Dumfries and Galloway. He keeps his love affair with his home territory, East Anglia, alive with regular visits to his caravan in Suffolk. After a career in tourism development and then conservation with the RSPB, he completed a Masters in Environmental Conservation from UCL. An avid naturalist with a fascination for butterflies, he likes nothing better than donning his boots and uncovering those hidden corners we all dream about. He is the project officer for two community environmental ventures: Castle Loch in Lochmaben and Moffat Community Nature Reserve; as well as co-owner of Summerlea House B&B in Moffat.
Donald Greig is a travel writer and publisher based in southern Scotland. He has spent much of his life travelling in the UK and overseas and still finds that nothing beats the fascination of discovering and learning about new places. Having lived in various countries around the world, he returned to his native Scotland in 2014 to write the Bradt guide to Dumfries and Galloway. He has written for a range of newspapers and magazines, including Independent on Sunday, Wanderlust and Countryfile, and he has written or worked for a range of travel publishers in the UK and Australia, including Rough Guides, Dorling Kindersley and Thomas Cook. Between 2007 and 2014 he was Managing Director of Bradt Travel Guides, curating an endlessly fascinating list of guidebooks to destinations worldwide.
